Edit: With changes in the pricing for the provider Sumome.com. Essentially, they don’t allow integrations with your email provider like Mailchimp or Aweber so its not as useful. I have done another real fast video that shows how to do the same thing with a different provider. In some respects it’s actually better than SumoMe but it doesn’t have all the functionality. The video is not my best but wanted to share it before you start down the SumoMe path.
Collecting Emails for your Shopify Store
Email marketing has to be one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to market your ecommerce store. Mailchimp is one of the newsletter companies that connects to pretty much any shopping cart right now. And with their Free tier, its a great way for new ecommerce store owners to get started. Of course, the hard part is actually getting prospects to sign up to your email list. Website pop ups have been found to be a very effective way of collecting email addresses.
Adding Popups to Shopify
As useful as they are, no one has come up with an easy way to create a pop up on your ecommerce website, until now. In the videos below, I am going to show you how to create pop ups as well as other email collection mechanisms to grow your list. We will be using Mailchimp but it works equally as well with Aweber and GetResponse if that is what you are using.
If you need to sign up for mailchimp, click the link below:
Don’t want to use Pop Ups on your Shopify Store?
I know many people find Pop ups annoying and won’t add them to their website. If this is you and you don’t want to add a pop up but still want to collect email address, the next video will show you a different option that is less intrusive and might be a better option for you.
Hello Bar Alternative for your Shopify Store
Whether you use the above capture mechanisms or not, take a look at the video below that creates a banner at the top of your page to get people to sign up as well.

Collect those Email Address
So now that you see how easy it is to set up, what is stopping you from doing it? There is no programming and even if you pay the extra’s at Sumome it is in my opinion, well worth the cost, and cheaper then other options out there for you.
Edit: After some request, I added some video for delivering an ebook instead of a coupon. It can be found HERE.

So very helpful!! Thank you so much!
You are very welcome and the slide up looks great on your store!
I just followed your instructions and went over it again but the pop up mailer won’t load on my site :/
Hi Cat, it is hard for me to give you advice. Can I suggest you go to the instructions at https://help.sumome.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1815216-install-sumome-on-shopify and see if their instructions are a bit different than mine?
Hi! I took this tutorial to set up a subscribe form for Shopify : https://www.soundest.com/blog/shopify-newsletter-signup-form/
The platform looks interesting and pricing seems fair. But, I can’t see that it provides any auto-responder functionality. Please let me know if that is wrong. Without the auto-responder functionality Shopify can already do abandoned cart emails from within the system…
Hey! Thank you for the post. I was wondering how you create a pop up that offers a free product in exchange for an email? So once they offer their email they will receive an email with an ebook from me? Thanks
Hi Amy. Yes you can and it is not a whole lot different. When I get my client work done I will try and do another instructional video. But, long story short, if you use the paid version of Mailchimp, you can set up an auto response that will send it as well as additional follow ups. This is the ideal solution so you can send people through a priming funnel for your product. If you don’t want to set up an autoresponder sequence, you can specify a landing page when someone confirms instead of the default Mailchimp page. On that page you can put the ebook as well.
I have finally gotten to creating the walk through video… https://onlinestorehelp.com/free-shopify-pop-up-delivering-ebook-instead-of-coupon/
Hi there, i would like some help with your pop up on shopify video. I followed the steps which were excellent and i appear to be capturing information when i look at Sumome email info, but its not sending these emails back to my mailchimp list and its not sending the mail chimp thank you note and coupon to the signups. im not sure what is going wrong but i’d really love some help. Thank you!
Matilda, can you take a look at this LINK and see if it helps you? This is directly from Sumo Me and explains what might be wrong.
You’re the Man!
Great tutorial, however after I followed all the steps I got to the Mail Chimp part and now you have to pay at least $20 a month to be able to use Mail Chimp feature with Sumo App which actually ends up more then the $5 a month app you can get at shopify app store 🙁
Vicki, you are correct. Sumome changed it so you have to pay now to get any integration. I will have to now see if there any other free things we can use with Shopify and BigCommerce. This was a big mistake on SumoMe’s part. It essentially made their free tier unusable.
Hi Chris,
You can collect email addresses by offering a free survey, books, new season lookbooks and another kind of free downloads in exchange for the visitors email addresses. Here is a free Shopify app for this: https://apps.shopify.com/email-before-download
Thanks Oleg. You are correct, that app allows you to do it. Unfortunately for those on a budget, it requires the Pro version to connect to Mailchimp, which is the same issue I ran into when Sumome changes their pricing structure.
