So many people are now in the process of moving their Magento Go store to a new shopping cart after eBay announces they were closing the platform down. One question I got asked was, will we maintain our search engine rankings when we move to the new shopping cart.
301 Redirects
The best way to make sure you maintain those search engine rankings is to use what are called 301 redirects. Normally , when a particular product page is indexed by Google for example, if someone clicks that link, you will get a 404 not found page. To many of those and Google de-indexes those pages and you lose your rankings.
With a 301, when someone clicks that link, two things happen. First, the system automatically points them to the new URL, so for them, its seamless. Also, Google sees that you have permanently pointed a URL to a new one, and they can update their listing.
This is especially useful when you have backlinks to particular pages or products that you can’t change and don’t want to lose. In the video below, I show you how to set up those redirects in two shopping carts, Shopify and BigCommerce.
Keep your rankings
Make sure you keep your Search Engine Rankings by doing those redirects. Most modern shopping carts allow them in one way or another. If you are not sure what shopping cart to use yet? Take a look at my shopping cart reviews to see which one will work best for you.
